Awajun

Indigenous people of Peru

The Awajún people represent the second largest demographically indigenous Amazonian people in Peru, after the Ashaninka. They are characterized by their commitment to the defense of their ancestral territory. They are sweet cassava growers, hunters and fishermen who live in relatively dispersed communities on the banks of Amazonian rivers. They are currently threatened by the increase in natural disasters caused by climate change, oil exploitation, drug trafficking and demographic exodus. This report was carried out in 2023 accompanying the NGO Acción Contra el Hambre.
