Rohingya exodus

The Rohingya are an ethnic group native to Myanmar (formerly Burma). They are Muslims, speak Rohingya language and constitute a minority in Rakhine state, where the majority of the population is Buddhist or Christian. Ultimately, they are an ethnic group not recognized as part of the country's 135 official ethnic groups and since 1982 they have been denied citizenship in Myanmar because the government considers them Bengali immigrants and not Burmese. After events of violence and political persecution, which worsened since 2012, in 2017 more than a million Rohingya were forced to flee to neighboring countries, mostly to Bangladesh. It is the most persecuted minority in the world.
